Bloomingdale’s has announced the retirement of Francine Klein, merchandising chief of the U.S. department store chain and a 45-year veteran of the company.

Mrs. Klein Feb. 28 ends her tenure as executive vice president and general merchandise manager for center core products such as handbags, shoes, fine jewelry, fashion accessories and beauty, as well as Bloomingdale’s outlets.

“Francine has been a driving force in the evolution of Bloomingdale’s and her legacy is one that has shaped who we are today,” said Tony Spring, chairman/CEO of Bloomingdale’s, in a statement.

“Francine has been an integral part in our growth and has made an immeasurable impact on Bloomingdale’s and the retail industry,” he said.

Owned by Macy’s Inc., Bloomingdale’s is one of the leading department store chains in the United States, along with Saks Fifth Avenue, Neiman Marcus and Nordstrom.

Department stores in the U.S. are under tremendous pressure from monobrand stores and ecommerce, both channels gaining popularity with affluent consumers.

Mrs. Klein’s successor is Stacie Borteck, who has held positions as vice president and divisional merchandise manager of cosmetics and fragrances, and divisional merchandise manager of center core products for Bloomingdales.com since joining the company in 2007. Her promotion is effective Feb. 3.
